MISERY IS ON ITUNES

Okay folks, hold your breath. I was playing around on the iTunes store, and just for fun typed in the search box "Misery maroon 5", and SURE ENOUGH the song (which is listed as Various Artist, but is CLEARLY M5) came up!

Edit: Yes, it's the actual song, I just finished a runthrough. Holy freakin goodness, it's great.

I bothered myself to do my usual in-depth listen with my ears plugged in (recommended way) and here's what I came up with:Misery (with custom monitors plugged into my ears!)

I listened to this about a gazillion times to do my ‘bare bones, isolate each instrument thing. This was quite a difficult task. Mutt Lange is an interesting producer. I actually get the feel of a singularity of mindset (at least on this only example I have so far). That is not to say that there aren’t an amazing number of layers, and tweeks and twists on individual tracks which change as you listen. I guess this is where a producer earns his salary and it DOES sound like he used lots of pro-tools (well, REAL pro-tools, not the home versions ~ haha). I don’t know who produced SAJ, which is our flagship, M5, best ever so far; but I don’t get the feeling we will be back to the soul of SAJ for Hands All Over. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want an SAJ clone, I would just like them to stream the backbone into new stuff. Oh well, as usual, I digress… So here goes:

There is this squishy, ‘dirty’ guitar on the right, then a clearer, ‘chinky’ guitar on the left with lots of echo and layer upon layer of vocals (throughout the whole song; and these are not single stream layers, but harmonies and stepping in and out with phrasing). At one point later on (I don’t want to forget to mention this) there are what my ears describe to my brain as electronic handclaps; the good old American hand-clap, but definitely without the flesh and blood sound. (Does any of this make sense? And believe me, I doubt you’d notice it if you don’t have your ears plugged in and had it pointed out to you). I liked Mickey adding handclaps live on the Today Show ~ I guess I wasn't imagining it!

Okay, after the first verse, they go into the chorus of “I am in Misery…” and this is where the bass starts to carry you with a spread out, flat layer of keyboards there, too. Yes, there does appear to be pro-tooling on the sound of the bass on some parts of the tracking, but there are also, at times, some pure, unadulterated bass runs that get poured into your ears like a river of liquid mercury…

Anyway, back to the song. The “salty skin’ part (and I AM let down by the lyrics in here, just as I was with all of the Kiwi lyrics) has this single note keyboard trail, kind of like an echo of my own tinnitus, only much more pleasing and tuneful.

Then we’re at the “Girl, you really got me bad…” and it’s all back to good and LOTS of layering to the vocals, kind of like a good piece of Baklava, with the phyllo pastry not totally uniform as there are those chopped nuts and gooey honey in between the layers.

Then comes what I call the ‘turnaround’ part, “You say your faith is shakin…” Here, the bass (gosh it’s good, no, FANTASTIC, in this song) is still carrying you on with slides and the keyboard bed is there to snuggle on while you ride the bass and cymbal crashes. Oh, yes, the drums. They are basically straight on,very pop (teetering on disco?) nothing really fancy, but there are the cymbals that keep putting up a nice layer to vibrate the whole underpinning.

After the turnaround, listen very carefully (and this HAS to be plugged into your head). The bass does this thing in your ears where the beginning of the run is on both sides and appears modified by the tools, but the end of the line is single and centered in the middle of your head (5 notes running down scale). It’s like a cooling breeze giving you pure bass trickling icy water down your parched throat.

Then back to “Why do you do what you do to me?” which brings us full circle, back to the guitars that were there in the beginning, chinking away. I still say it’s got to be difficult to reproduce live what the layers of vocals and guitar rifts give us on the recording. Well, they proved me wrong on this comment on the Today Show, didn't they?

And if the live version of Last Chance I heard at the U of DE was any indication, someone is finally letting Mickey loose to play the bass the way he KNOWS how to do. But for sure, it sounds pretty good to me so far. Holding my breath for the Full Monty in September...

I have to admit that I was a bit skeptical with how good this song was going to be. I am psyched about the new album and the new sound, but for some reason this song gave me a little cause for concern. I may be pissed with the M5 franchise for the whole touring/single/album fiasco, but I must say....touche M5, touche. This song owns me. Job well done. <3

I think I like this song better than any song from IWBSBL(minus nothing lasts forever)
But FANTASTIC single choice these guys did not disappoint!!

It really does sound pretty over produced, which kinda disappoints me. But I'm addicted to this song, the past few days I've listened to it a ridiculous amount of times, pretty much non-stop.
And the bass line. Phwoaaaar. Hopefully there's some more like that on the rest of the album!

Yeah, it DOES sound quite overproduced but the bass line makes up for the sound :D

It really grew on me after hearing it a couple of times. It does sound a lot better on the radio. It is a perfect summer song.

I have to admit, I heard it on the radio today and it sounded better than it did on my iPod. Overproduced stuff typically does because it's hard to hear all the bells and whistles. I still think it's too poppy for my taste, but then again, singles are rarely representative of an entire album so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

The Bass line in this song is great, and I love hearing James too. It does sound a bit like "THIS LOVE" to me... but not as RAW as I was expecting, lets see how it is "LIVE"

I think this VIDEO 4 guys made, "MISERY" is really good, and funny but a great way to listen to the song, and see some "video".

Wow, I'm surprised how well the song is doing on Itunes!

I am so happy. I love it. and it's clearly radio gold. the "girl you really got me bad..." parts are my favorite. i like the tempo changes too. the song structure is pretty complex (compared to, say... "won't go home without you" or some of the others). oh. and Mickey Madden is a bass GOD! =]

IWBSBL all over again. Not everything needs to be run through pro-tools until it squeaks (which is exactly what the song sounds like to me..squeaky wheels). I don't know. Either I've outgrown this band or they've flown past me. I'm guessing the latter, because I'll love SAJ until I die.

taking down the single off of YT won't help you, the single has officially leaked all over the internet.

And it's huge. People seem to love it, congrats guys :)

And how the hell has it not leaked earlier? Like, I've NEVER seen a new song being treated that secretly. And it actually hasn't even leaked, it was released officially on Itunes, this is ...fascinating o_O

I think this song will sound great (better) live. I say this because like someone said before it is very slick and the lack of hard drumming and piano/keyboarding is evident. Its more bass and guitar in this song. Nothing wrong with that.

I guess I should clarify. What I mean is that it sounds more electronic than authentic (like SAJ had clear distinct instruments which you could hear each person playing on the song) This sound seems like it belongs on IWBSBL.

I have to hear it a few more times before I can whether or it I like it or not. I probably will due to any live version that they release.

its totally out now - i just downloaded off Amazon.com MP3s for .99 cents. Best dollar I ever spent!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love it, its so pop and very slick, which took me by surprise at first. I just can't wait until the album is out, I need more new tunes! But right now I'll just settle for the video - I hope its out soon!

This is awesome, it's playing right now, I can't believe it's finally out, I waited so long! And I'm glad they really kept their music style and did not try some other crap that we hear on the radio. I'm such a fangirl, but they're worth it!
