Maroon 5 on the Cover of this week's Billboard! | News

Pick Up this Week's Billboard Magazine with Maroon 5 on the Cover or check the article below:

Party of 5

By Mikael Wood

Maroon 5’s Glossy, Blue-Eyed Pop-Rock Has Earned It Huge Airplay And Success, If Not The Respect It Feels It Deserves. Enter ‘Mutt’ Lange, Famously Eccentric Superstar Producer. Can He Transform Maroon 5 From Mere Hitmakers Into Rock Stars?

Adam Levine doesn’t want to sound like he’s complaining. He recognizes that Maroon 5, the Los Angeles-based outfit he’s led for the better part of a decade, has consistently enjoyed the kind of success most bands only dream of: millions of albums sold, multiple Grammy Award wins. Yet on the eve of the release of Maroon 5’s third studio album, “Hands All Over” (due Sept. 21 from A&M/Octone), Levine can’t help but gripe a little.

“The general perception of our band,” he says, “still needs work.”

The 31-year-old frontman is talking about an image issue that’s dogged Maroon 5 since the group’s earliest days, when it broke out with the sleek top five single “This Love.” “On paper we’re really no different than any other rock band,” he says. “We’re a group of guys who’ve been friends for years who write songs and release them. But there’s definitely this strange disconnect over who we are and what roles we play in making our music.” Levine remembers once catching wind of a rumor that Maroon 5 – which also includes guitarist James Valentine, keyboardist Jesse Carmichael, bassist Mickey Madden and drummer Matt Flynn – started out as a boy band.

“I have to admit that’s very frustrating for me,” he says. “I do a lot of work and write the lion’s share of our music. As much as the band plays a huge role in helping me put it together and writing certain parts, it’s all done in-house. No one has ever written a note for this band who wasn’t in the inner circle. I’m not sure people know that.”

It’s suggested to Levine that perhaps what fuels the misunderstanding about Maroon 5 is his place in young Hollywood’s glittery firmament. “That’s probably true to a certain extent,” he acknowledges. “I do feel like if I had long, shaggy hair and wore a hat with a feather in it and refused to do interviews I’d probably have a different reputation. But I look kind of like an architect, so people get confused. I upset their rock‘n’roll norms.”

Those architect looks aren’t all that upsetting to people’s rock‘n’roll norms. Maroon 5’s music, a constantly undulating mixture of rock, soul, funk and pop, does the job pretty effectively as well.

“We’ve always gone through different stylistic phases ever since we started playing music together in seventh grade,” says Carmichael, who formed a group called Kara’s Flowers with Levine, Madden and original Maroon 5 drummer Ryan Dusick when they were still students at L.A.’s Brentwood School. (That group released an album on Reprise in 1997 before morphing into Maroon 5 with the addition of Valentine; Flynn replaced Dusick in 2006.) “One day it’d be Green Day meets Fugazi, then the next Oasis meets the Black Crowes,” Carmichael continues. “It was all over the place, just anything we felt like writing. And that’s still the way it is.”

“It’s the difference between Nirvana and Prince,” Levine adds. “Nirvana is awesome but you sort of know what it is. Whereas with Prince it’s brilliant but you’re not sure what’s going on. You’re like, ‘What the fuck is this?’ It’s a little more abstract.”

The follow-up to 2007’s “It Won’t Be Soon Before Long” (which has sold 2.1 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan), “Hands All Over” hardly nails down that abstraction: Lead single “Misery” is an uptempo disco-rock number streaked with trebly Nile Rodgers-style guitar, while “Stutter” rides a stomping glam-pop groove. Elsewhere, “Don’t Know Much” exudes a dusty retro-soul vibe and the rootsy “Out of Goodbyes” features a cameo by Lady Antebellum. Still, Levine says, there’s a focus to the new set that eluded the band last time out.

“Coming off a massively successful first album, I think we couldn’t help but be trapped in our own heads on the second record,” the singer says. (“Songs About Jane,” Maroon 5’s 2002 debut, is a 4.7 million copies sold.) “We worked with a lot of different producers; there were a lot of cooks in the kitchen. All the songs were good, but there was no central thesis behind the album. It was more just a collection of songs we recorded with people.”

For “Hands All Over” – which will arrive in a standard 12-track edition, as well as a deluxe package with five additional songs – the band elected to hire a single producer, Robert John “Mutt” Lange, a choice that A&M/Octone president James Diener says emphasizes Maroon 5’s identity as a “very successful mainstream pop act that writes and performs its own material.” Diener calls the record a reminder of the days when the Police, Fleetwood Mac and the Eagles ruled the top 40. “With a lot of the pop records flourishing in the marketplace today, it’s more of a producer’s medium than an artist’s medium,” he says. “Maroon 5 is a musical alternative to that.”

Jordan Feldstein, the band’s manager at Career Artist Management, says the time was right to recruit Lange, who’s best known for his multiplatinum work with AC/DC, Def Leppard and his ex-wife, Shania Twain. “He’s been able to take bands who’ve already had success to another level, where they really make their most pivotal and classic records,” he says. “I think Mutt saw in the band a lot of potential as songwriters and musicians.”

“He really felt that the group was poised to make a career album,” Diener adds. “They made an impression on Mutt when they met him, and he realized that the band’s ambition matched his own. Artists always say, ‘Every song has a place on the record,’ but it doesn’t always happen. To have 11 or 12 songs and each one be worthy enough to release as a single or an emphasis track, that’s always been Mutt’s methodology. I’d imagine it’s difficult to find an artist with an equivalent determination.”

“He helped make the songs more straightforward,” Levine says of the Mutt Lange experience, which found Maroon 5 trading L.A. for Switzerland, where the reclusive producer operates his studio on the shores of Lake Geneva. (Lange declined requests for an interview.) “What we do is very simple, and he helped us narrow it down a little bit and make it more cohesive. He said, ‘Listen, you guys need to make sure you’re writing the best material you can.’ He pushes you hard. It made me realize that no one has ever really pushed me before. He was the first guy who was unafraid to say, ‘This isn’t good enough. Try again.’”

The singer remembers presenting the album’s title track to Lange. “He said, ‘I like the drums and the riff; strip it down to that and start over.’ I wanted to tell him to go fuck himself, but I didn’t. I started over, and then a new, much more amazing song came out.”

“It wasn’t always fun,” Carmichael admits. “For sure, there were moments that required you to bang your head up against the wall. But I like to think that all the energy and the time and the effort we put into the songs translates into something that has the ability to affect somebody.” He laughs. “Adam got into a Twitter fight recently with Deepak Chopra about a tweet of Deepak’s where he said something like, ‘All true good work flows effortlessly.’ And Adam was like, ‘That’s not true, bro. Some work requires serious blood, sweat and tears.’”

“Mutt got some amazing stuff out of the band,” says Mike Shipley, who mixed “Hands All Over” and has worked with Lange for more than 30 years. “There are some phenomenal vocals from Adam, and the musicianship and songwriting hit a new level all the way around. Everything was just upped.”

Despite that insistence on Lange’s brand of sonic perfection, Sam Farrar of Phantom Planet, who co-wrote “Misery” with Levine and Carmichael, says “Hands All Over” returns to “the everyday person vibe they had on the first album.” “It Won’t Be Soon Before Long” presented a slicker image, with the musicians wearing tailored suits and precision-crafted haircuts. “They’re back to having fun, acting like college students,” Farrar continues. “People like that. We want to put artists on a pedestal, but we also want to relate to them, and I think this record gets back some of that.”

“The aesthetic on the second album was maybe a little inaccessible,” A&M/Octone executive VP/head of promotion Ben Berkman says. “But now I think they’ve got that thing where actors hit their 30s and they’re actually hipper and hotter than ever. Think about how young girls freak out about Brad Pitt. I think Adam’s kind of becoming that guy.” Berkman spoke to Billboard from Miami, where the band had just completed an in-studio Q&A with listeners of that city’s top 40 station WHYI. “It was a huge success,” he says, “and it definitely represented the young end of the station’s audience.”

Showcasing the humans behind the hits is central to the rollout of “Hands All Over.” Last month Fuse televised a concert the band played at New York’s Beacon Theatre, “and we used that as an opportunity to do an old-fashioned junket,” Berkman says. “We brought in a lot of programmers and took them to dinner and the show and then to a party with this band. And that wasn’t to stroke their egos. It was about, ‘Hey, guys, you may not remember how many big songs this band has and how unbelievable they are live, so we want you to see it for yourself.’ All I heard all night was, ‘Dude, we forgot how exciting Maroon 5 is.’”

Berkman admits he faced initial resistance getting the band back on top 40 radio following the three years since “It Won’t Be Soon Before Long.” “There’s been some skepticism from PDs who are unsure how to program ‘Misery’ in a set with Ke$ha and Jason Derülo and Lady Gaga,” he says. “Or who are unsure if they even want to.”

“Maroon 5 presents a big challenge to certain rhythmic-leaning pop stations that are used to playing club-oriented records,” Diener adds. “But once the records do go on, they seem to stick out like a sugar-coated sore thumb. If we can get them to take a chance – and it seems odd to say ‘take a chance’ with an act that’s sold 10 million records – the band does connect, which suggests that maybe the audience has a thirst for more variety than station are inclined to presume.”

“Misery” is No. 19 on the Billboard Hot 100, and follow-up track “Give a Little More” debuts at No. 86 this week. “All that skepticism eventually went out the window,” Berkman says. “And those people who were like, ‘Yeah, we’re not sure,’ became coverts. Radio needs hits from stars, from bands people know. You look at the chart right now and it’s like, ‘Sure, this artist has hits, but does anyone know who he is?’ Everyone knows who Adam Levine is.”

To keep the band’s profile high, Feldstein says the act will be on the road for much of the next year. Its current U.S. headlining tour hits Indianapolis Sept. 1, after which a break is planned for promotional duties around the album’s release next month; another round of American shows begins Oct. 6 in Santa Barbara, Calif. Next year the band will play Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Australia, then head back to the States for another run, according to Feldstein. Release week TV engagements are scheduled for “Today,” “Late Show With David Letterman,” “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live!.” “Chelsea Lately” and “Tavis Smiley.”

The message throughout these appearances? That not unlike Blondie 30-something years ago, Maroon 5 is a band. “It’s the reason we make a point of having them do some sort of performance in their videos,” Feldstein says, “and why their Rolling Stone cover had all five members on it, and why we’ve never gone out to the third-part writers du jour. We’ve really tried to maintain the idea that this is a self-contained unit.”

New York Times music critic Jon Caramanica says hiring Lange should help get that point across, though not necessarily to the broad base that Diener and Berkman say they’re courting. “It’s been a while since Mutt Lange had a real trademark sound that people got behind,” he says. “So to go back and choose him, rather than choosing someone more of the moment, that to me is a real signifier to AOR fans, people who are into late-‘70s/early-‘80s stuff. You’re basically sending a smoke signal to that audience: ‘We like what you like. We like the songs that you like. We’re interested in being a band that’s like the bands you used to like.’”

If that turns out to be the case, Feldstein acknowledges that there are certain advantages to Maroon 5’s in-between status among younger listeners. “I don’t think our fan base minds if we license music,” the manager says. “Kings of Leon didn’t license their music to ‘Glee,’ but we can do more stuff like that and reach people we might not normally reach.”

However far “Hands All Over” goes toward solving Maroon 5’s perception problem, Levine feels the band’s longevity is already beginning to pay off. “You get to a point where you can outlive your criticism, and I think we’re starting to turn that corner now,” he says. “People are saying, ‘Wow, this isn’t a flash in the pan – this is a band that’s been around through other bands’ rising and falling.’

“At the end of the day it’s about whether or not the music resonates with people,” he continues. “Are people showing up to our concerts? Are they buying our records? That’s all that matters.”

Maroon 5's Adam Levine & Jesse Carmichael

July 26, 2010

Wednesday, July 28 at 5:30pm ET Sharp!

With new album "Hands All Over" due in September, lead single "Misery" scorching up the Hot 100 and a massive world tour starting in just a few days, Maroon 5 has a lot going on this year. We know there are lots of you out there who want to hear about everything directly from the band, so we're hosting a live video Q&A on Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at 5:30pm ET with none other than frontman Adam Levine and keyboardist Jesse Carmichael. They'll be on camera answering your burning questions. Ask what you want to know by tweeting your questions to @billboarddotcom using hashtag #bblivechat. Bookmark this page; the Livestreamed video chat will appear right here.

_________________________

Levine recently told Billboard that "Hands All Over," which was produced by Mutt Lange (AC/DC, Shania Twain), "kind of hearkens back to the spirit behind the first record [2002's quadruple platinum 'Songs About Jane']." The singer said the new album's title track is one of the hardest rocking tracks Maroon 5 has ever recorded while single "Misery" is "the most Maroon 5-sounding song on the album." Also keep an ear out for country-flavored "Out of Goodbyes," which features a guest appearance by Lady Antebellum, and the '60s pop-flavored "Stutter," which Levine said is "not like anything you've heard from us before."

Fans who see the band live this summer will be treated to "a nice handful" of these new tunes, Levine said. "We're just getting back to he roots of what we are, which is just a band. Somewhere along the line we turned into a very successful band, but we're definitely all about the idea now that we just like to go play music, so we're going to do that as much as possible, all over the place."

So perhaps that's why all of his songs explore the drama and pain of love. "It's good therapy to write about them," Levine recently told MTV News.

Ah, but it's even better therapy (or at least more fun) to act out that romantic angst with spine-cracking stunts and a domineering blonde! In the video for the band's bubbly new single, "Misery," (the first off their new album Hands All Over) Levine stumbles off a building, crashes through plate glass and gets smacked around by supermodel Anne Vyalitsyna. "We decided to focus on violence instead of sex this time around," joked bassist Mickey Madden.

Check out the behind-the-scenes footage for the video below, and keep your eyes peeled for the premiere of "Misery" later this week on MTV.com.

» buzzworthy.mtv.com

The first single from Maroon 5's upcoming album Hands All Over was reported to hit radio stations on June 28. Monday, June 21st maroon5.com posted a reminder that the single would be released digitally on Tuesday but some fans had discovered that the single was already available on iTunes and Amazon.com very early Monday morning. The song was eventually removed from online stores but it was already circulating on the Internet, including on YouTube.

Misery is already a hit with fans. Maroon 5 didn't seem upset about the leak as band members Adam Levine and James Valentine took to Twitter, glad that fans liked the song and that the leak hadn't come sooner.

As It Won't Be Soon Before Long seemed like a departure from Maroon 5's debut album Songs About Jane, fans didn't know what direction the music might take on the next album. Putting legendary producer Robert "Mutt" Lange into the mix created bigger expectations. Misery has delivered, containing the best of hits This Love and Makes Me Wonder, funky bass lines, unforgettable melodies, lovelorn lyrics and a catchy chorus. Misery has the potential to be this summer's pop hit and could launch Hands All Over as another platinum selling album.

Never has a song with such a depressing title been so much fun to listen to! As the saying goes, if you’re going to write a song about being completely miserable, set it to the most delightful, happy-go-lucky music you can think of! Hear it below.

“I am in misery / There ain’t nobody who can comfort me,” sings a spunky-sounding Adam Levine on the track about a girl not calling him back and leaving him wanting more.

Maroon 5 new single “Misery” is Upbeat,

Funky and Accessible

June 12, 2010

Maroon 5 have just sent over their lead single “Misery” from their forthcoming album Hands All Over, and despite its title and equally downtrodden lyrics, the song is an upbeat funky number – and based on a few listens, it might be the most widely accessible song the band has released yet. Yes, all the recognizable Maroon 5 elements are there: Adam Levine’s smooth high pitched vocals parceled over the measures, confessional midsection, exposed guitar lines at just the right time. Nevermind that the key lyric of the song is I am in misery, there ain’t nobody who can comfort me; Levine sings it with such seeming joy, and the music behind it is so hoppy, that you find yourself paradoxically singing “I am in misery” along with him, just as joyfully as he is. And unlike some of the weightier funk on Maroon 5’s previous album, “Misery” is a song that you’ll have trouble remaining still in your chair while listening to.

Unfortunately the rest of Maroon 5’s Hands All Over won’t be released until September 21st – three months from today – but “Misery” just set the bar high for the rest of the new album.

Maroon 5 - Big Fish: The Mega Popstars Navigate the Ever-Expanding Sea of Indie Music

by Scott T. Sterling

“The rock star industry is effectively over. I think it’s great though. This is the fuel for a new renaissance in music.” -Adam Levine

Adam Levine looked like the very definition of chill. Sporting a scruffy beard of at least a few weeks, he kicked back on the patio of a comfortable rented mansion in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles while other members of Maroon 5 and a few friends were engaged in a heated session of NBA Live 10 on a huge TV inside. Having just recently completed their suprisingly consistent third album, Hands All Over (thanks in large part to it being their first with legendary producer Mutt Lange), the mood was more than just a little relaxed.

Levine leaned forward at a wrought iron table in the bright mid-day sunshine to speak directly into a tape recorder while Maroon 5 keyboardist Jesse Carmichael sat by his side, quietly making a birthday card for his girlfriend with a small paint set.

“I was 19 years old and on one of my first big dates with the love of my life at the time, Jane,” he intoned into the recorder in reference to the same girl immortalized in the title of the band’s 2002 debut, Songs About Jane. “It was me, her and her friend in a car stuck in gridlock traffic on the 101 at Highland trying to go to the Hollywood Bowl to see Paul Simon and Bob Dylan. We had a bottle of wine and I was really excited. But I also really had to pee. Like really bad,” Levine said.

“I was thinking of how to handle it in front of this girl I really liked. It was obvious that I wouldn’t be getting to a bathroom anytime soon,” Levine continued. “There was this huge concrete slab, so I got out and just peed on it. All of a sudden I hear this huge cheer behind me. There were hundreds of people screaming, clapping and honking their horns at me while I’m peeing. So I turned around and threw my arms up in triumph and they all went crazy. It was one of those moments where I completely did the right thing. It impressed Jane somehow. So I just went with it.”

Adam Levine has been accused of leading a charmed life. He won’t argue that point. There is an unbroken line between his notorious tale of winning a big game at the buzzer for a team coached by his dad at the tender age of 6, to the out-of-the-gate success of only his second band, Maroon 5. Formed out of the remnants of his first band, Kara’s Flowers, Maroon 5 has achieved the kind of old-school mega-success in the music industry that many believe (Levine included) will never been seen again.

Currently biding their time, waiting for their new album to be released in the fall on September 21 (the original summer release date had to be scrapped due to a packaging snafu), Levine and Carmichael pondered the state of being a high-powered major label act in an increasingly indie world.

944: How does Maroon 5 end up making an album with Mutt Lange?

ADAM LEVINE: He literally just called us up and asked if we’d be interested in working with him. I mean, we couldn’t say no (laughs). The curiosity and potential of it was really exciting to us. This is our third record. Not only did we want it to be the best record it could be but we wanted to really make a statement. It can be easy to become complacent in our situation. He took us right out of any comfort zone immediately. His attitude was like, “your success is cute.” It’s very humbling. We’ve sold a lot of records and had a lot of success. But it’s a minor accomplishment to what he’s done in his career.

944: Did he push you creatively?

JESSE CARMICHAEL: Oh, yeah. We’d come in with a song that we were really happy with, and he’d just completely change it. It was great, because no one has ever really done that before.

AL: It’s so easy to fall into that trap of thinking that everything you do is great. If there’s no one telling you different, it’s easy to start believing it. Soon enough, the music is crappy and no one is listening. We were all a little bit thirsty for an epic experience that would yield something potentially really special. Mutt Lange absolutely gave that to us. He really just takes whatever you do and pumps it full of…something. He made us sound different than we ever have before.

944: Is there a theme to the album?

AL: The idea behind this record was to make songs too big to play in small clubs. There’s a lot of deliberate drama on this album. We’re not trying to hide anything or be cool. We’re making a statement. We’re throwing it all out there. These songs all came from a very honest place. The band does take a lot of chances. The title track is classic pop metal akin to Def Leppard, circa “Pour Some Sugar on Me.” I call that one the Mutt Special (laughs). It’s a bold record. There’s no doubt about it. I was just as surprised by “Out of Goodbyes,” the gentle country duet with Hilary Scott of Lady Antebellum. It’s like the Malibu version of Kid Rock’s “Picture.” I’d like to think that song could help expose our band to a completely different audience. I want as many people as possible to hear our music. I’m not ashamed to say it.

944: It’s only been three years, but the music industry has changed quite dramatically since Maroon 5 last released a record.

AL: It is what it is. We were fortunate enough to get in right before it all kind of crashed. I almost feel like these new bands can’t get big anymore. Everything is so splintered into a million different micro-categories, labels don’t have the dough to even spend anymore — there’s just no real focus. The rockstar industry is effectively over. A lot of money was wasted. and a lot of people died doing that shit. It feels like a big karmic retribution. I think it’s great, though. This is the fuel for a new renaissance in music.

JC: It’s not just in music. It’s everywhere. In art, business, whatever, it’s more about taking the initiative and doing something meaningful. Bands are no different.

Maroon 5 Get Violent In 'Misery' Video

May 18, 2010

By James Montgomery

Maroon 5's new, Joseph Kahn-directed "Misery" video is many things — almost all of which are violent.

"The cool thing is, when Joseph wrote the treatment ... after reading a few sentences, I thought it was really amazing," M5 frontman Adam Levine told MTV News on the set of the video.

"Because it kind of turns the whole idea of the sexual energy between two people — a guy and a girl, a music video, you've seen that a million times — that exists in this video, but it's turning it on its ass and having the girl be the more domineering one who's trying to kill me."

"We decided to focus on violence instead of sex this time around," bassist Mickey Madden added.

"We like to switch it up," Levine joked. "The next one will be about drugs."

We'll just have to wait and see about that. In the meantime, we have "Misery" to look forward to. The band shot the clip with Kahn last week in Los Angeles, and from the sound of things, it's going to be very different from anything M5 have done in the past.

"I think it's going to be fun. I just had my first harness experience. That was very interesting. I got lowered onto the street, in the middle of traffic, because I fall off a building," Levine laughed. "I'm curious to see how it turns out. A lot of falling and violence [so far]. I've already been beaten up and thrown off a building today. We'll have to see what comes next."

And while the "Misery" video is a new look for the band, the song itself — the first single from their upcoming Hands All Over album, which hits stores September 21 — mines familiar territory. Set over a decidedly funky beat, it's Levine documenting the decay of yet another relationship, something that even he will admit has become his bread and butter in recent years.

" 'Misery' is about ... the desperation of wanting someone really badly in your life but having it be very difficult. Kind of what all the songs I write are about," he smiled. "I'm not treading on new ground, but I think a lot of people — including myself — deal with that all the time. Relationships are difficult, and it's good therapy to write about them."
