Poe Ets

In Time of War

        I

So from the years the gifts were showered; each

Ran off with his at once into his life:

Bee took the politics that make a hive,

Fish swam as fish, peach settled into peach.

     And were successful at the first endeavour;

The hour of birth their only time at college,

They were content with their precocious knowledge,

And knew their station and were good for ever.

Till finally there came a childish creature

On whom the years could model any feature,

     And fake with ease a leopard or a dove;

Who by the lightest wind was changed and shaken,

And looked for truth and was continually mistaken,

Ana envied his few friends and chose his love.

        VIII

He turned his field into a meeting-place,

And grew the tolerant ironic eye,

And formed the mobile money-changer's face,

And found the notion of equality.

And strangers were as brothers to his clocks,

     And with his spires he made a human sky;

Museums stored his learning like a box,

And paper watched his money like a spy.

It grew so fast his life was overgrown,

And he forgot what once it had been made for,

And gathered into crowds and was alone,

And lived expensively and did without,

And could not find the earth which he had paid for,

Nor feel the love that he knew all about.

        XXI

     The life of man is never quite completed;

The daring and the chatter will go on:

But, as an artist feels his power gone,

These walk the earth and know themselves defeated.

Some could not bear nor break the young and mourn for

The wounded myths that once made nations good,

Some lost a world they never understood,

Some saw too clearly all that man was born for.

     Loss is their shadow-wife, Anxiety

Receives them like a grand hotel; but where

They may regret they must; their life, to hear

The call of the forbidden cities, see

The stranger watch them with a happy stare,

And Freedom hostile in each home and tree.

        XXV

Nothing is given: we must find our law.

     Great buildings jostle in the sun for domination;

Behind them stretch like sorry vegetation

The low recessive houses of the poor.

We have no destiny assigned us:

Nothing is certain but the body; we plan

To better ourselves; the hospitals alone remind us

     Of the equality of man...

"...art itself is a satisfactory end."

"...art itself is a satisfactory end."

you are sweet... you are awesome... you are beautiful...

today is Sunday... october 19th...

it's late at night... i'm finally finishing unpacking my suitcases after that last tour... (which ended october 4th... the day before James's 30th birthday!!!)
and I'm making a tour post to celebrate you and me and everything...

the stars are out in the sky as much as you could hope for in Los Angeles, and I am almost ready to sleep before a big week...

but before I do, I wanted to pass along an e mail that a good of mine wrote a few days ago...
His name is Noah Gershman, and he is a film maker who makes very interesting and poetic movies... He's got one in the works right now, but he needs to raise some money... I have faith in what he's going to make, so i thought I'd just pass his e mail along and see if any of you are inspired to also take a leap of faith on a very pure artist's next film... que sera sera...

And also, before I go... i want to say thanks to all of you that made it to the shows with Counting Crowes, Sarah B, and Augustana... it was the best time on tour we've had yet... and things just keep getting better... the sound... the interactions with you all... the ways that we can all help keep things as green as possible... and the ways that we can all just keep spreading good thoughts and energy around... we're all in this together...

Now we've got to get ready for a tour of South America, and soon we'll be back home for a while, ready to start writing music... preparing to make another record (although there is another surprise in terms of records that we have coming up soon) These are crazy times, aren't they? i wonder if everyone has always said that... nah... i think these days are especially crazy... but especially exciting... there's certainly a lot of stuff to write about these days... not much time left before that election... isn't it crazy?!!?!
I hope you guys are making your own art right now... whatever it is... i hope it's helping...

I trust you're having a great time right now...

adios...
take care...

here's the e mail from Noah...

"Dear Friends,

It's been years now, but I am tremendously excited to be working on a new movie.  I have focused these last three years on writing and was only recently stricken with the inspiration to turn one of my stories into a short film.

As you can imagine, pulling the money together for a short film is difficult.  There is really no potential for financial return.  Money spent on a project of this kind supports the idea that art itself is a satisfactory end.

Our movie, "Tour Group", has been gaining momentum – we have secured an ideal cast and an excellent D.P.  Now we need to come up with the funds.

I have not yet found any one single benefactor for this project and so considered that I might inspire a community of individuals to help support us monetarily.

Our budget is  $15,000.  I am attempting to raise this amount within the next week, no later than October 31st.  It is ambitious, but I continue to believe that anything is possible.

Contributions from $100 and up would be deeply appreciated.  We of course welcome any larger donations, of $1000 or more, which would ensure us of reaching our goal.

Jason Ritter will be playing Molloy and Mariana Palka will be playing Lydia.  Their movie "Good Dick" opens this weekend (Oct. 10) at the Nuart in L.A. and next weekend (Oct. 17) at the Sunshine Cinema in New York.

Please let us know if you will be able to make a contribution, and if so for how much, at - tourgroupmovie@gmail.com.

Please make checks payable to Noah Gershman and send them to - 9140 Beverlywood St.  Los Angeles, CA 90034.

We will be making our accounting available online so you can observe directly how your contribution is being put to use in our production.

Thank you so much for your time and consideration.  Please feel free to contact me by email with any questions.  We look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,
Noah Gershman

Hello Everyone

HELLO EVERYONE

happy wednesday night... july the ... the somethingth... i'm sitting at home just a few days before we take off for our summer tour... very exciting... our rehearsals have been going well and there are some good new surprises for y'all...

I'm listening to Sly and the Family Stone... the song called IN TIME... have you ever heard it? it's crazy how good this song sounds... such amazing musicians...

SO!!! the reason i wanted to write this post... besides to celebrate that tomorrow night is the full moon for all of us here on earth... is to talk about the Amnesty International Video we made for the album version of the song If I Never See Your Face Again. My dad shot all the photographs for the video, and then he and some very talented friends put the video together and then donated it to Amnesty... it's a really beautiful thing to have my Dad, who has supported my love for music for my whole life, come out on the road with us and share the experience of traveling with this band...
I just wanted to see if you all had seen it... check it out and spread the word... spread the love... thanks for everything. Hope you're doing well today. Love, JRC

Clean Energy Day Of Action 5/20

Clean Energy Day Of Action 5/20

Friends,

My sister is organizing this effort. Can you help?

Congress has been debating for the last six months on whether or not to extend a package of clean energy tax credits that make it cheaper for individuals and companies to install renewable energy systems and build energy-efficient buildings and appliances.

You can help stop global warming by urging your U.S. senators to immediately reauthorize clean energy tax incentives that will otherwise expire soon!

Today, on May 20th, over 100 organizations and companies are asking their members and employees to contact their Senators on this issue. Hopefully Maroon 5 fans will get involved too!

Tell your Senators that time has run out. Every day that passes without an extension places more green jobs at risk, and slows down our transition to a clean energy economy.

TAKE ACTION HERE

love, jrc

Something's Happening...

Something's Happening...

hello everyone... happy may 9th 2008... may 10th technically from san antonio... TX... USA... EARTH... THE SOLAR SYSTEM... THE MILKY WAY... ETC... ETC>>>

it's been a very exciting day so far... lots of seemingly meaningful seemingly coincidental things seemingly happening... and now it's past midnight... we're here to play a radio show tomorrow night... and then a few more of those types of shows, some of em acoustic, around this country before heading to France for a tour of the countryside parks... not a bad place to spend the first part of this summer...

Right now i'm listening to Eddie Vedder and friends sing Bob Dylan's All Along The Watchtower from the "I'm Not There" Dylan Movie soundtrack... Now Richie Havens singing Tombstone Blues... Richie Havens is amazing... did you ever see the original Woodstock concert film documentary... from 1970... a good year... i was still nine years away from being born... but i still remember it to have been a great time... sort of... i think... i'm not sure...

Isn't being sure of things a funny thing? What can we be sure of? gravity? death? who we love? who loves us? that richie havens is amazing? that we can be sure of nothing?
that one and one is two? Here's what Dylan has to say...

"Now I wish I could write you a melody so plain
That could hold you dear lady from going insane
That could ease you and cool you and cease the pain
Of your useless and pointless knowledge"

Speaking of pointless... here's a great interview with a very cool thinking man... Jon Rappoport... a reporter and an an artist and a man and a thinker and an interview-ee...

freedom awaits

freedom awaits

happy NEW year everyone... here we are in New York... they say a storm is coming tonight...

bob dylan say's a hard rain's a-gonna fall...

This is from a book called Light on Life by B.K.S. Iyengar...

"The life of a householder is difficult, and it always has been.  Most of us encounter hardship and suffering, and many are plagued by physical and emotional pain, stress, sadness, loneliness, and anxiety.  While we often think of these as the problems caused by the demands of modern life, human life has always had the same hardships and the same challenges- making a living, raising a family, and finding meaning and purpose.

These have always and will always be the challenges that we humans face.  As animals, we walk the earth.  As bearers of a divine essence, we are among the stars.  As human beings, we are caught in the middle, seeking to reconcile the paradox of how to make our way upon the earth while striving for something more permanent and more profound.  So many seek this greater Truth in the heavens, but it lies much closer than the clouds.  It is within us and can be found by anyone on the Inward Journey."

I hope you're having a good day.
Love,
jrc

that's all folks

that's all folks

that's all for now...

We played our last event of the year today on a German TV show here in Koln.
Now I'm listening to the nutcracker suite and thinking about LA time and jet-lag...
so tired... oh... well...

Here are todays two balanced items.

One is an e mail i got from Moveon.org about the consolidation of independent media outlets into bigger and bigger corporations... which means that individual companies won't be able to decide for themselves what kind of content to put on their news reports, or what kind of music to play on their radio or music video stations because all the choices will be made by a small group of people who own the giant corporations... and that's not a good thing for diversity, free speech, or open-mindedness.  So please click on this link and sign a petition saying that you oppose such takeovers.

And then relax with an amazing video of a piano playing cat...

Hope you're having a good day.  Hope you're not feeling stressed about the Holiday season.

Have fun.

Enjoy.

Love.

be good for goodness sake...

christmas carols are so great... I'm listening to ella fitzgerald's swinging christmas carols album right now... we're in Munich... it's pretty and cold... pretty cold.  It's so strange when words you see and use all the time suddenly look so weird... pretty... it sounds like it should be spelled pritty... or pronounced Preh-Tee...

OK... so the main reason i wanted to post tonight was to share a video that my dad just sent me...
it's only twenty minutes... less than the two hours of Zeitgeist... (although, you really should watch that movie too) And if you've got the time to spare, just watch it... right now... and then share it with people who might not be aware of the issues the movie points out.  Please!!!

calm.  ok... calm.  The movie is called The Story of Stuff... check it out...

But wait... maybe there needs to be some incentive... (other than the fact that unless people actively continue to spread awareness things could get to such a precarious and irreversible place that environmental disasters and wars of desperation will cause the death of millions... that's the incentive that works for me... what works for you?) and then again, maybe incentive is the wrong word... balance is a good word... Yes, balance... So i've decided that for every video I post that's aimed at changing things for the better (which probably involves some kind wake up call style information that makes you so upset about the way things are that you just have to Do something to help) I'm also going to just post a feel good and laugh and celebrate video.

Today's sense of balance is brought to you by Ryan from the band Guster and his dog Jerry.
Click here to laugh... and then click the Story of Stuff to cry and get righteously motivated.

Thanks. jrc
